Mentor(s)
July 16, 2008
I think the word “mentor” has been used rather flippantly. To me, a mentor is someone who gives me guidance in more dimensions than just academic coaching. In fact, a mentor doesn’t give academic coaching. He/She gives life lessons.
A true mentor is like your dad or mum, who shares with you his/her life experience, in the hope that you can learn something. I love a quote that I read somewhere “Life is too short to make all the mistakes”. Similarly, a mentor will try to shorten your beat-around-the-bush paths and guide you along the better route.
Finding a mentor who is willing to teach, is of course the hard part. Well, my only advice is to keep searching, and perhaps you will be lucky to meet one, or more, and perhaps you will have a trusted ear and brain to help you in your recourse.
