Single session primary schs; All new teachers will have to be graduates

It seems like big reforms await the education industry. With the introduction of only single session for primary schools (i’m guessing they will abolish the afternoon session), there are bound to be other repercussions besides the benefits as mentioned in the article. I’m thinking more along the line of more co-curricular activities and supplementary classes, which means that the kids’ schedules will be packed even tighter than before. It just keeps getting more stressful, that is my biased opinion. Whats yours?

Neighbourhood schools doing well

Its certainly heartening to learn that neighbourhood schools have their own niche in attracting talent. Something i agree with wholeheartedly is that beside academic grades, schools should emphasize on inculcating character teachings and morals. I think characters are what make a good person, good.

The Importance of Phonics

I don’t know phonics. But my 5 years old nephew, Jeremiah does. He knows it for at least a year now. He picked it up himself after watching a Phonics DVD that his mum picked up from the Pasar Malam.

Using newspapers to teach

Aptly described by the title, I’m in full support of promoting wider usage of newspaper in classroom. In my opinion, Newspaper are more interesting than textbooks, which is important, if you want the student’s attention. Start from Straits Times, and move on to the overseas paper for more critical reviews of world issues, I say.

Do you know that Mandarin is the most commonly spoken language in the world? This is followed by English, Hindustani, Spanish and Russian. French came in 10th.
